Viewtiful Joe Review for GameCube
Posted on Thursday, December 25, 2003 @ 04:01:22 am E.S.TThe second installment in Capcom's Fantastic Five, a series of five games exclusively for the GameCube, seems like it will be the most promising. Though Viewtiful Joe may look odd at first glance it has proved itself to be an instant classic. It was a big gamble for Capcom to go for a 2D based game at this point and time but the final product is amazing.
As the story goes, Joe's an average movie fanatic who ends up in a wild action movie world to rescue his girlfriend, Silvia, from evil. It will only be a while into the first level before you can slip into the superhero suit and begin the true action. Joe will have to make his way through stock-piles of enemies annihilating them in his path. He will have to use his visual effect powers (VFX) powers to fight his enemies with more style.
There are three VFX powers you will receive from Captain Blue: mach speed, slow motion, and zoom. Using these VFX powers will give you a cinematic and unique look on the screen while clobbering your enemies. Your VFX power will be limited for your disposal. There will be a meter that you will have to keep a watchful eye on. Without these powers, this wouldn't deserve to be called a game. They add so much on to the Viewtiful Joe experience.
Joe can come up with insane combos while beating on his enemies. As you smack them around, you'll rack up "Viewtifuls," or points. After each episode you can use your “Viewtifuls” to purchase new moves or items. The new moves include things like Joe’s “Sliding Kick.” There are items like the “Voomerang” and “Shocking Pink” bombs.
Viewtiful Joe is really fun to look at, especially during combat. It has very elegant cel-shaded 2D graphics set in 3D landscape. The levels in Viewtiful Joe range from banks to sewers. Although they're not very interactive, it's nice to see what surprises it holds.
Look at the time!
The bosses and enemies you come across have real cool and funky looks to them. The effects while using the VFX powers in combat are truly gorgeous and in a league of their own. It is simply amazing how the visuals look when you’re punching and kicking your way through robotic ballerinas at mach speed. The game runs in progressive scan mode to give even better visuals. We have to give loads of credit to Capcom for creating this graphical masterpiece.
The music in the game normally fits the environment. Quick and catchy tunes when fighting through simple enemies and more dramatic music when battling a boss. During the cut-scenes there is a lot of dialogue going on which may be hard to understand. You will hear lots of things in battle: punching, grunting, kicking, things breaking, etc.
At first, the game may look like an easy beat-’em-up that can be conquered in a few hours. But, this turned out to be maybe the most challenging action game on the GameCube to date. Lucky for players with less experience, there are two modes in the game, Kids and Adults. Beating the game on both modes is a challenge itself, but there will be more to do after the game is finished. Once you are done beating the game with Joe you can play with other characters and new levels of difficulty. Viewtiful Joe is insanely tough and will take lot of time to complete.
Overall, the game will take about 10-20 hours to complete. If you own a GameCube or plan to own one, Viewtiful Joe should definitely not be overlooked. The experience in Viewtiful Joe is one that you don't want to pass up. Viewtiful Joe will bring back memories of old school games we used to cherish on our old consoles.
