TimeSplitters 2 Review for PlayStation 2 (PS2)
Posted on Tuesday, October 28, 2003 @ 06:56:24 pm E.S.TFrom the makers of GoldenEye and Perfect Dark came TimeSplitters and now we have TimeSplitters 2. TimeSplitters 2 is back with more action, more features and best of all, more fun. Fast-paced, endless shooting, and sleep-less nights come to mind when I think of TimeSplitters 2. A first person shooter that has great graphics combined with great gameplay equals a great first person shooter. That is exactly what TimeSplitters 2 is. If that is not enough to make you want to buy this game, then read on.
Graphics: Free Radical did an amazing job with the graphics. If you have a sharp eye, then you will see the detail put into the game. You can see the cracks in the stones. You can see the rust on the chains. The details on the weapons are probably the most noticeable. The use of many vibrant colors and textures add a lot to the game’s graphics. The shadowing isn’t the best, but it’s not bad. One of the best things about this game is that it ALWAYS runs at 60fps. There are no slow downs in TS2 at all. Even when playing co-op with a friend, no slowdowns.
Design: This is where TimeSplitters really excels compared to most other First Person Shooters. The many different time periods in which the levels take place in always make the game unique and fun. You play levels from the 1800’s in Notre Dame to the 2400’s on the Timesplitter’s space ship. The weapons that you use also depend on the time period and the area of the level. So, say that you were in Chicago in the 1930’s: you would be using pistols and Tommy guns. Or, say you were in the Aztec Ruins in the 1920’s: you would be using crossbows. You can also get one weapon in each hand which is just fun to do. Imagine shooting thugs with a Tommy gun in each hand; sounds like fun, doesn’t it?
There are 3 different game modes in TS2: Story Mode, Arcade Mode and Challenge Mode. Story Mode tells the story and is done through missions. In each mission you receive objectives which you have to complete in order to finish the mission. In most of the missions, there are also optional objectives, which you can complete if you wish to. Story Mode has 3 difficulties: Easy, Normal and Hard. If you play Story Mode in normal or hard, there will be new areas and new objectives that you will have not seen before if you played on easy. If you don’t play on normal or hard, you are really missing out. One reason why I love this game is because there is a co-op story mode, so you and one your friends can play through story mode together, which is loads of fun.
Arcade Mode is pretty much like playing multiplayer deathmatch on your own with a bunch of bots. Sometimes there are special rules, like if you stay still you can regain health. The object of Arcade Mode is to get trophies. The only way to get trophies are to get a certain number of kills or points in a given amount of time. There are also some levels where you play as a team with bots in case you favor team deathmatch rather than single.
Challenge Mode is an entertaining, but difficult game mode. There are lots of different game types to choose from. One of them requires you to go through a level without being seen. You can still shoot and kill enemies, but you lose if they see you. They aren’t very long, but can be quite challenging (hence the name “Challenge”). Another game in Challenge Mode is called Glass Smash. All you have to do is break all the windows in the level to win. There are only 2 levels, but the 2nd is very difficult. There are many more challenges, which I did not name, but they make the game all the more fun.
Sound: The music in TS2 really should have been better. The futuristic alien planet levels’ music is very aggravating. I don’t really understand what they were going for. I think it was something along the lines of techno, but it just sounds horrendous. On the other hand, the different gunshots sound exactly as they should. The futuristic guns sound just as you would imagine, something that sounds like it was taken out of a small piece of a techno song. The voice acting is excellent. It shows you what the character is like. For example, in the 1930’s Chicago level, you must protect a snitch who is betraying his boss. He is fearful for his life, so he sounds frightened while you, a detective, sound confident and curious.
Addiction: With all the features available in Timesplitters 2, you will be playing this game for a while. Story and Arcade Mode will keep you busy for weeks on end. Co-op story mode and Deathmatch make TS2 is a great multiplayer game to play with your friends. When you’re finished with it all, you can make your own maps with the built-in mapmaker. There are tons of secrets, including new characters and new maps. In all, this game will keep you hooked for months. Review By: Deepan Paul - 1104 Reads
