Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour Review for GameCube
Posted on Monday, October 06, 2003 @ 09:28:52 pm E.S.T

Mario returns with all of his old buddies in Nintendo’s sequel to the popular Mario Golf on the N64; Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour. The game features many of Nintendo’s past and present mascots. Many new modes, features and courses are now playable.

Graphics: A new thing that you will notice is the FMV sequence featuring some of the playable mascots. The character models look extremely detailed during the game. They're better looking compared to some other Mario games. Each character has a distinct trail that will follow their ball when it's hard. Some things in the game are very detailed, while others aren’t all that visually pleasing. For example, you’ll be able to see individual blades of grass in different parts of the courses. Also, the water in the game will show reflections.

A flaw in the game is its camera system. Some obstacles may get in the way of your view. You may be forced to be to shift around to see the ball better. This is not really a major problem that will affect the game itself.

Design: As you would expect from a golf game the controls are quite simple. They are easy to grasp since you’re mainly using the [A] and [B] buttons to make your shots. You will use [A] to start the power meter and [A] to stop it. If you press [B] to stop it you will be prompted to press a button to establish the accuracy you want on your shot. Also, you can use the [A] and [B] buttons to add backspin or topspin on your shots.

There are many modes in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour. They include: match play, skins play, doubles, character match, coin shoot, club slots, ring shot, and speed golf. The doubles mode will have two players playing as a team, taking alternating swings. The character match mode puts you up against a computer player. The coin shoot mode has you collecting coins with your ball. The club slots mode is extremely challenging. It uses a slot machine to choose your club for next shot. In the ring shot mode you need to get your ball to go through the rings. In speed golf the amount of time you take up plays a factor in the game. Lastly, there is an array of mini-games. One will have you try to make as many birdie shots as you can. Another will challenge you to get as close to the pin as possible.

Sound: The environments have good music to go along with them. They feature some of the tunes from the past Mario games. Every character has a set of humorous dialogue that they will use throughout the game. Using their dialogue they can taunt their opponents. They attempt to mess with their opponents’ head by taunting them. Taking too long to make your swing will result in the crowd booing you. The game uses Dolby Pro Logic II, which will treat many people to greater sound.

Addiction: Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour is great for a day on the green or even for an outlandish challenge. There are a number of things to unlock, which will keep you playing for a pretty good amount of time. The multi-player mode will keep you and your friends entertained, trying to avoid temper tantrums from those damned double bogeys. If you like the Mario Golf series, this is the game for you.
