Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour Review for PC
Posted on Sunday, October 05, 2003 @ 06:30:41 pm E.S.TThe Command and Conquer Series has grown to be one of the biggest Real Time Strategys (RTS) in the world. Now is the time to commence battle with over thirty new units, fifteen new missions and features to keep your adrenaline rushing for hours on end in the new expansion, Command and Conquer: Generals Zero Hour. Blizzard's top competitor in the race against EA was Warcraft: 3. EA became ahead of the game in the new addition to the Command and Conquer series. Now it's your turn once again to control the world with the Global Liberation Army (GLA),USA and China.
Design: With the innovative units, general rankings and bone crushing tactics, Zero Hour is the best RTS modern warfare game to date. With the new addition of the Generals such as “Anvil” Shin Fai which gives him the upper hand in infantry and “Dr.Thrax” the head GLA toxin general. These are just two of the nine generals that you can play in, challenge mode, skirmish or multiplayer. With these nine Generals you will reak havoc upon your foe or vice versa. When choosing your General in multiplayer mode or skirmish, you have to think and play smart because with advantages comes disadvantages. For example, if you were “Pinpoint” Townes general versus Malcolm “Ace” Granger, you’d have the benefit on air defense and a selective few ground units. Where Malcolm “Ace” Granger has the edge on air control. But, with your laser defense nothing will stop you from conquering him. With this addition to Zero Hour, it gives you much more leeway on how you will prevail over your enemy’s tactics.
If you had a problem with controlling your super weapons or abilitys that problem is no more. Now they will show up on the bottom right side of your screen instead of you having to click the building structure and use them. This is a big help because if you’re being attacked you have much more time to choose your strike. Also now you can disable super weapons; which means, you now can’t construct as many as you want. I found that to be extremely annoying in multiplayer mode, where your enemy just sat there and built super weapons up the whole time, so this is a big plus.
The battle system in Zero Hour hasn’t changed much at all, from its predecessor Generals. Although the environment has changed tremendously, from where your battling it out at a cargo dock yard, to parts of Iran in single player mode. Zero Hour includes everything that any command and conquer expansion pack should.
Graphics: If you remember Command and Conquer: General’s graphics (which I hope you do), you’ll recall the real life modern warfare feel that it gave you. The feel of the atmosphere when controlling your battalions of tanks as you worked your way through city streets and mountaintops. Now, EA has added more sophisticated looks to the terrain and weather, the snow and rain is a good example. The snow pounds down on your tanks as they roll through the map of “Bitter Winter”. Another graphical addition to Zero Hour is the cinematic clips in single player. There is now opening clips of, really awful actors, people acting as news reporters. An interesting thing about the reporters is that they would fill you in on what's about to happen in an upcoming mission.
Sound: The music in Zero Hour goes great with the feel for modern warfare. Listen to the drums and the cymbals slam in the background as you fire away your scud missile launcher. Hear bodys scream in horror and pain as the designated target is nailed. Hear the engines roar as tanks rip across the terrain while armies upon armies have bloodshed battles to find the true General!
Addiction: As you work your way through the 15 missions for GLA, USA and China you should stay playing the game for a few days. If you’re a hardcore gamer, you can always change the skill level each time you beat every team’s single player mission to keep you going longer. With the ability to gain badges and ranks in multiplayer mode it will have you playing for months. There hopefully will be an official ladder added to Zero Hour. If you remember Red Alert: 2 and Yuri’s Revenge they had official ladders that Westwood created. You would be enabled to join clans, take on people all across the world to gain points, and gain ranks while playing multiplayer. With all these new additions, Zero Hour will keep your mind busy for hours. Review By: Jim McGuire - 6987 Reads
