Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution Review for PlayStation 2 (PS2)
Posted on Monday, August 18, 2003 @ 04:01:56 am E.S.TDo you have what it takes to be the Champion? Step into the ring with the greatest characters of the Virtua Fighter series. You must prove yourself in a variety of tournaments and fights to show that you are the true champion of the arena. Your quest will be long and hard as you fight to become the number one Virtua Fighter in town. Can you handle the fight, or will you be the one left lying on the ground?
Graphics: Virtua Fighter has come a long way since the first installment pf the Virtua Fighter series. The graphics are superb. The player characters still are the block type as in the older versions, but they are refined and look better than ever.
The different stages look good also. Certain stages will have parts that break if enough force is applied (like when you slam your opponent). The tile on the floor and even the barriers that keep the stage enclosed can be broken. With more detailed character models, exquisite details, and reworked stages, this games graphics are absolutely great.
Design: This is an evolution of the other Virtua Fighter games. There is so much to do in this game; you may feel like you’ll never get through it all. The characters can now be customized with over 1500 accessory items including; clothing, hairstyles, weapons, and even the color of their hair. There are 15 characters total, including two all new characters.
Arcade mode is non-stop fighting action. You will do missions and be rewarded upon completion with anything from money to special items. Versus mode allows you and your friend to go head to head in grudge matches. Training mode is great for beginners. There are a variety of training programs including a free flow beat down on the CPU, a command screen, and a trial mode for those of you who are just helpless.
The quest mode in this game is by far the longest quest mode in any fighting game on next-generation consoles. There are a variety of locations in the city where you will fight. You must complete the missions that are given to you in the arcade status to be able to enter the tournament. During this time you can win prizes and increase your rank, experience, and win ratio. After beating a tournament you will come into some money, but be mindful of what you spend it on. You can save up and get some really good items.
Last, but definitely not the least is the 10th anniversary game. This is an extra to the game but still quite fun. This addition lets you flashback to the very first Virtua Fighter ever, and play! This helps make Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution the most in depth fighting game out. VF4: Evolution was made a PS2 Greatest Hit for its release so it only costs $19.99. This is a great price for a game that could be charging $49.99 like other new games.
Sound: Sadly to say, sound was not very high on Sega’s agenda in this game. There really is nothing special about the sound in this game. Although there is some background music its barely noticeable. The punching and kicking sounds are good, but again aren’t anything special. Sound was not a complete disappointment; it just didn’t add anything to the games value.
Addiction: This game was made for people with a lot of time, because the urge to play is so high. You shouldn’t be able to beat it in 1 day, but you may get close if you play all day and night. There are too many items you need in order to succeed. There are also a large number of fights that need to be completed before even venturing from one part of town to the next. This game can get mind numbing at times because of all the fighting, but then the difficulty kicks in and you're off again. Review By: Mike Bellovin - 1183 Reads
