Madden NFL 2004 Review for PlayStation 2 (PS2)
Posted on Sunday, August 17, 2003 @ 04:02:53 am E.S.T

The biggest authentic football simulation franchise is back! Madden NFL 2004 may just be the greatest Madden game ever. Even with all new features, controls, and a new look, they were still able to keep the best things in the older Maddens. The new and improved online play makes this possibly the greatest football game ever. If you’re ready for football season, you’re ready for Madden NFL 2004.

Graphics: Graphics are an important part to any game, that’s why EA Sports did such a good job on this game. The player graphics are great, quite an improvement over last years Madden NFL 2003. You can now see many more details like the veins and huge muscles of the players. The field’s look great, and even show the baseball diamond if your stadium is shared with the local baseball team. The fans look like paper figures as they do in most sports games, but that doesn’t have very much impact on playing.

Madden NFL 2004 is full of hard hits.

Design: The greatest football simulation game is back and better than ever. The new franchise mode has a variety of new features. The first feature is training camp, which allows you to pick one player for each of the categories to improve. Another new feature is the owner box. This lets you manage concession stands, parking, ticket prices, and the accounting for your franchise. There are also the other franchise features such signings, releases and trades.

Some other modes such include tournament, mini-camp, two-minute drill, football 101, practice, and situation. Tournament mode lets you have a tournament where you choose who to play and how many players. Mini-camp allows you to practice all the key aspects of football at a variety of difficulties. Two-minute drill allows you to practice playing in clutch situations, like when there is only two minutes left to score and win the game. Football 101 allows teaches you all about football with John Madden. Situation allows you throw yourself in any game situation, and you must try and get yourself out of it.

Like I said, the online play is back and improved. You may use your already existing EA, AOL, AIM, CompuServe 2000, or Netscape AIM handle. There is also an EA messenger so you and your friends can see if each other are online. The new feature this year is EA Sports Talk, which allows broadband users to use their headsets and chat with others playing Madden NFL 2004. There are also online tournaments, which can be ranked or played just for fun. The tournaments are customizable so you can play simulation, or go crazy with no rules at all.

Sound: Madden NFL 2004 has a custom soundtrack. If you don’t like some of the songs that are on there, you can simply go to options and turn them off. The sounds while playing are very nice. One example is if you throw a bullet pass, you can hear the football slam into the receiver's hand. You’ll also hear the grunting and screaming of linebackers as they try to hold each off. When one gets through the line and hits the quarterback, you'll know because you will hear the slam. The tackling sounds are great because they give realism to the game that’s unlike that of most games.

Addiction: Madden NFL 2004 was made for all addiction purposes. This game has an extremely high addiction level. There are so many different types of ways to become skilled, as well as a franchise mode with you as the owner for 30 years. The online mode is just as addicting, and will feature tournaments and a new scoreboard that will show the best ranks in defense and offense. The scoring shows the top 100 players as well as your rank and score. That way you'll know where you stand compared to others. This game can also become very competitive online, making it that much better. This is a great game for all football fans.
