Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Review for Xbox
Posted on Thursday, August 14, 2003 @ 03:43:32 am E.S.T

It’s four thousand years before the Galactic Empire and the war with the Sith is raging. Hundreds of Jedi have been called to aid the Republic in this time of great death and destruction. You awaken as the last hope for a falling Republic. Will you become a master of the Jedi order, or will you fall to the Dark Side of the Sith? You must choose your path as conqueror or savior in a galaxy where nothing is certain.

Graphics: The graphics for Knights of the Old Republic are excellent considering just how large or a 3D RPG it is. There are very few glitches, and you will notice the details and realism for all the characters. There are only a few parts in the game in where you may think the graphics could use a little bit of spotting up, like the lighting issues on Planet Taris. That’s just getting nitpicky though because this is one of the few games that show you the true graphical power of the Xbox.

Design: Knights of the Old Republic is a party based RPG. You do not always need to take your whole party on quests with you, but in most cases you will. The game begins while your ship is under attack. You awaken and do not remember anything about your past. This is where your journey begins, the journey to become a Jedi. You are a republic soldier who is strong in the force, and you must stop the evil Dark Lords of the Sith and save the Republic.

The battle system is very unique. It’s pretty much turn-based, but you can switch to any member of your party at any time to choose their attack simply by pressing the black button on your controller. It’s very easy to select different attacks, force moves, and pretty much any item in your inventory. You can use 1 player to heal, another to use force lightning, another to do a flurry attack in an instant.

There are a ton of great features in this game. There are 9 customizable characters that can accompany you in your journey including, Wookies, Twi’leks, Droids, and Mandalorians. While leveling up you can gain over 40 different types of powers, and while training to become a Jedi you get to construct your own personalized light saber and choose what kind of Jedi you want to be. The light saber can be customized in color and upgraded with different crystals that you can find, or purchase.

During the game you acquire your own starship, so you can travel to different planets and do quests for the Republic. There are seven planets in which you must travel to. The Planets aren’t the only thing that makes this game massive, there are also numerous side-quests, mini-missions, and sub-quests that will keep you entertained and upgrade your characters all over the place. All of these quests involve you and are not just running errands, which gets annoying and seems to be in most RPG’s. Some of these quests include Dueling, Swoop Races, Air Fights, and playing the card game Pazaak. These are just a few examples.

Throughout the game you will also be able to choose your path to victory. By choosing certain answers and playing the game how you want, you can either gain Dark Side or Light Side points. Depending on which way you go, skills and features of the other side will become more expensive. All of these features make this game extremely fun to play, and add a certain unique depth.

Sound: There is no distinct music for this game, but you may recognize many of the sounds from the Star Wars films. The sounds of light sabers, blasters, swords, and rifles are present. There are even some of the songs from the movies in this game, which is cool. The sound will make you feel like you are in the movies. Overall, it’s almost perfect.

Addiction: This game is extremely hard to put down once you start playing. It will take you many hours to beat it, especially if you try and do all of the side-quests. If you do decide to try and do all of the side-quest’s, you will have even more fun and the game will take way longer to beat. There are also two endings, meaning you can beat the game as part of the Dark Side and part of Light Side. This game is great to the end no matter which way you play, and it’s great game for all gamers, especially ones into RPG’s. The RPG that Xbox has desperately needed is finally here, so you better check it out.
