SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Review for PlayStation 2 (PS2)
Posted on Thursday, August 07, 2003 @ 09:23:41 pm E.S.TDo you think you have what it takes to be a U.S. Navy Seal, and fight with the best, in the harshest environments of the world? Lace up your boots, pack your supplies, load your weapon, and let’s find out. You are a U.S. Navy Seal commander; your team of Seal's has been called to duty. The target is global terrorism. As the old saying goes, can you “Keep your feet wet and your powder dry”?
Graphics: Compared to other PlayStation 2 games, Socom’s graphics definitely hold their own. They could be slightly improved, but fortunately graphics aren’t the main reason to play the game. The environments look semi-realistic, but have some room for improvement. The in-game videos look sweet, there’s not much more too it. The Seals themselves are detailed, many of their features stand out very well.
Design: This is a team based combat game that takes place in 3rd person view. There are 12 deadly missions where you must prove your strength and leadership against hostile terrorists. The missions include many things such as; ambushes, hostage rescues, and demolitions. There are 4 locations you will fight in including Alaska, Thailand, the Congo, and Turkmenistan. The missions have a range of difficulty from easy to hard, most of which are hard.
Seals must use stealth tactics just like they do in real life, in order to beat missions. There are over 30 weapons you can choose from before every mission, and your whole Seal team can be customized with the weapons you want them to have. One of the awesome features is that you can lead your Seal team with the Socom headset, which can be purchased with the game. You can program commands for the headset to recognize your voice, and use them to control your AI’s in combat.
Multiplayer mode is Broadband only; therefore there is hardly any lag on the Socom servers. You can play online free with the purchase of the network adapter and access to high speed Internet. 16 players can play in an online game at the same. There is also a player ranking system that gives you lots of details on your possible opponents, and a convenient clan panel where you can manage your own clan, or join someone else’s. This is the first PlayStation 2 game where you can use a headset to communicate online, which is probably why it’s one of the most popular.
There are only a few flaws to this games design. The action menu that’s used to perform multiple tasks such as picking up bodies, weapons, and doing any other actions needed can be hard to figure out. Another thing that could be made easier is the headset in multiplayer mode. There are 4 channels you can put it on to speak; team, offense, defense, and dead. This makes it much more complicated than it needs to be. The last thing is this game lacks an offline multiplayer mode. There should be a mode to battle offline with your friends on one T.V.
Sound: The sound is very well done for this game. What do you expect when you need to walk slowly to make as little noise as possible. You can hear other players moving, which is extremely useful. You’ll also get an adrenaline rush when you hear gun fire and explosions all around you, as you’re trying to stay alive and find out where its coming from.
Addiction: The single player mode is addicting for a little while but with only 12 missions, it won’t last a hardcore gamer very long. The main addiction is the online play. If you have all the components for online play, this is a must for every PS2 gamer. No PS2 game can match this game in the online category. Unlike some games, there is no extra charge for online play, which gives even more incentive to play this game. With the Socom headset, there is a high addiction in the multiplayer mode.
