Panzer Dragoon Orta Review for Xbox
Posted on Thursday, March 20, 2003 @ 03:28:49 am E.S.T

Your name is Orta, and you have been held captive for as long as you can remember. Suddenly a dragon saves you from being killed by an evil dominant empire, and you start to realize the value of life. Now it is time to punish the forces of the empire for their wrongdoing. You will enjoy the plotline of this game as it progresses.

Graphics: The graphics are beautiful and the game engine runs very smooth. Even when massive enemies are performing various attacks at the same time on the screen, the frame rate stays the same. The cinematics are very nice, and the levels look great. This games graphics are above average, and set a high standard for future Xbox flying/simulation games.

Design: 95% of this game takes place in the air, so if you are into flying games you've got to get it. The design is like StarFox 64, but better. Your dragon has 3 forms; base wing, glide wing, and heavy wing. Each form is specialized for different purposes, and they all can be leveled up. You also have a special attack for each form called berserk, which becomes very useful in defeating large amounts of enemies and bosses. Pulling the L and R triggers makes your aim shift 90° at a time. If you pull both at the same time, your aim rotates 180°. This feature adds on to the uniqueness of this game's design, and without it this game would be impossible.

Each level has at least 1 boss you must defeat in order to move on to the next. While fighting these bosses you can swoop to any side of them to hit their weak spot, and to dodge their attacks. While beating the game you get special content in an area called Pandora's Box. This has to be the best content offered right now out of any Xbox game. Not only do you get videos, a picture gallery, an encyclopedia and an appendix, but also you get extra scenarios and sub-scenarios. Extra missions just for your entertainment, isn’t that a great thing?

Sound: The in game music doesn't get annoying like that of most games, and the sound affects during battles are awesome. This game also works in surround sound so if you have a 5.1 surround sound system, all the better for you. The only drawback in the sound category is that between the missions you have to read the subtitles because they are speaking a different language.

Addiction: Since you are graded for each level you play, the desire to go back and do better always exists (especially for hardcore gamers). 3 difficulty settings and lot's of features in Pandora's Box will keep you occupied for a while, but not forever. Since this game is only 1 player, after a while your desire to play will diminish. Multiplayer and Xbox Live capabilities would definitely increase the score.
