Outlaw Volleyball: Spike or Die Review for Xbox
Posted on Saturday, July 26, 2003 @ 12:03:35 pm E.S.TFrom the makers of Outlaw Golf, Simon and Schuster bring to you what is definitely the sweetest volleyball game on the market. Outlaw Volleyball isn’t only packed with features, its finished off with an impressive design and Xbox Live Support. In a comparison with other volleyball titles on next generation consoles, Outlaw Volleyball takes the cake without a doubt.
Graphics: The guys and girls of Outlaw Volleyball aren’t very detailed from a distance, but when zoomed in, viewing a replay or player response, you can see the characters details very well. You won’t ever see a face in the crowd because they are so far away, but the crowd doesn’t look flat like they usually do in most sports games. The different volleyball courts look very realistic but aren’t very detailed or spectacular at the same time.
Design: The main objective is to unlock everything and beat the game. While playing, you will need to learn how to gain momentum, this way you can absolutely crush your opponents. The more momentum you have, the quicker your turbo recharges. Turbo is vital because it's needed run fast and perform special serves or spikes.
After learning the very basics of playing through the Tutorials mode, you can move on to the Drills and Tour modes. There are 16 drills that will teach you about more advanced game play. When drills are completed, you will be able to upgrade your player's statistics. In the Tour mode, you can unlock more courts by beating the other teams of 2.
The game play itself is awesome because the controls are very easy to get the hang of. If you unlock everything, you will have a total of 16 characters and 11 courts to play with. You can play with up to 4 people on one Xbox at the same time, and the same goes for playing on Xbox Live. The ability to have a friend play with you on your Xbox or Xbox Live is one of this games best features.
Sound: The announcer (Steve Carell from “The Daily Show” on Comedy Central) is hilarious when you first play the game, but will become annoying after you hear him say the same things over and over. In the end, you will probably find yourself turning him off. The soundtrack to this game is very good, but like all CD’s gets old. This game does have the ability to use custom soundtracks, so you may find yourself playing your own music.
Addiction: There are 8 courts to unlock and 12 players to unlock and upgrade. Unlocking everything will keep you occupied for many hours. When everything is unlocked and you have beaten the game, you can still go on Xbox Live and show off your skills. Xbox Live capabilities mean this game never gets completely boring. A ton of your time will be occupied beating this game and competing with other players on Xbox Live, so there is no doubt that Outlaw Volleyball is a good investment.
