The purpose of the ESRB ratings system is to give information about what content any particular game contains, and to rank it for specific age groups accordingly. These ratings are particularly useful for parents that want to know just what type of games their kids are playing.

The Early Childhood rating is given to game titles suitable for ages 3 and older, These titles have no content that parents would deem as inappropriate. | |
The Everyone rating is given to game titles suitable for ages 6 and older. These titles may contain minimal violence, some comic mischief, and/or crude language. | |
The Kids to Adults rating is given to game titles suitable for ages 6 and older. This rating has been replaced by the Everyone rating, but may still appear on older game titles. | |
The Teen rating is given to game titles suitable for ages 13 and older. These titles may contain violent content, strong language, and/or suggestive themes. | |
The Mature rating is given to game titles suitable for ages 17 and older. These titles may contain sexual themes, intense violence, and/or strong language. | |
The Adults Only rating is given to game titles suitable only for adults. These titles may include graphic depictions of sex and/or violence, and aren't intended for people under the age of 18. | |
The Rating Pending title means that the game has been submitted to the ESRB, but is awaiting a final rating. |
