Vivendi Universal Games is counting-down to the launch of its action-packed space shooter, Battlestar Galactica, with the announcement that the game has gone gold and will ship to North American retailers on November 18th for the PlayStation(r)2 computer entertainment system and Xbox(tm) video game system from Microsoft. Set 40 years before the events of the classic TV series, Battlestar Galactica follows the adventures of fledgling Viper pilot, Ensign William Adama on his fist assignment onboard the Galactica. As Adama, players will engage in awesome arcade action as they take control of the hottest fighters in the galaxy, and tangle with dozens of swarming Cylon fighters in massive space battles. Additionally, players will get a chance to pilot a wide array of ships, from sleek vipers to heavy bombers and take command of an elite cadre of wingmen that increase in experience and skill as the game unfolds. The title has been rated "T" by the ESRB and carries descriptors for mild violence.
"For the first time ever, fans of the classic series as well as action gamers alike can take control of the celebrated Colonial Viper and engage in the frenetic dogfights that helped make the show a hit," said Michael Pole, VU Games' Senior Vice President of Product Development. "With cinematic quality visuals, intuitive controls and a mythological storyline, Battlestar Galactica is the next epic saga in the franchise's history."
Developed by Warthog Studios in conjunction with Vivendi Universal Games, Battlestar Galactica takes players to the furthest reaches of space in a desperate attempt to stop the evil machinations of the Cylon Imperious Leader. The game's mythic storyline will unfold over a series of Hollywood-style cinematic cut-scenes as well as an in-game story driven missions including search and destroy sorties in the legendary Colonial Viper, bombing runs over an alien water world and an escape from a Cylon stronghold in an enemy Raider. Each ship will feature their own unique flight characteristics, and players will be able to customize their weapons loadouts on the fly to suite their style of play. Additionally, as players successfully complete missions they will be assigned wingmen to aid them in the fight.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the hit TV series Battlestar Galactica which tells the story of the last surviving human colony on the run from an evil robotic race in search of its mythical home world, Earth. The series was produced by Universal Television and Glen A. Larson and was first broadcast on ABC in September 1978. Starring Lorne Green, Richard Hatch and Dirk Benedict, this epic space saga went on to become a veritable sci-fi classic. Although only 36 episodes were created, Battlestar Galactica has enjoyed syndication success for the last two decades, most recently on the SCI FI Channel.
The original series was released on October 21, 2003 on home video and DVD. In addition, a new Battlestar Galactica miniseries will debut on the SCI FI Channel in December. Currently in production, the miniseries is written by Ronald D. Moore (Roswell, Mission: Impossible II, Start Trek: First Contact) and directed by Michael Rymer (Queen of the Damned), with David Eick (American Gothic, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys) and Moore serving as executive producers. The beloved Battlestar gets a modern twist when SCI FI re-imagines the groundbreaking series with Oscarâ nominees Edward James Olmos (Stand and Deliver, Miami Vice Golden Globe winner) and Mary McDonnell (Dances With Wolves) at the helm.
